Laura Palmetta "Polly" Wells, 94, a resident of Fergus Falls, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at the Heartland Pioneer Cottage in Fergus Falls where she had lived since May, 2003. She was born March 16, 1913, in Elma, Iowa, to Carl Christopher Jacobs and Emma Wilhemena Ernestina Hagen, both children of German immigrants. The family moved to Fergus Falls in 1920-1925. Polly met her first love, Harry Wells about 1929. After a five year courtship necessitated by the depression, they took their mothers along as witnesses for their wedding in Sisseton, SD on June 18, 1934. The couple farmed in Buse Township, south of Fergus Falls. There they raised their two children: Laura "Laurie", born in 1939 and married to Richard Lundy, and Gene, born in 1941 and married to Jan Rachels. Another child, Don Lee, died in infancy. Polly leaves four grandchildren: Crystal Lundy (McSwiggen), Lolene Lundy Jones, Tammie Wells Samuelson and Dion Wells. She was also blessed with five great-grandchildren: Alissa and Matt McSwiggen, Jacob and Eli Samuelson and Abby Jones. Polly and Harry were very close and did everything together. During their younger years they enjoyed hunting deer together in northern MN and WY. After retiring in 1972, they continued to live on the farm, although they liked to spend the cold winter months in the south's warmth, first in Florida, then in Arizona where they developed many friendships in Mesa and Apache Junction. Soon after Harry went to his "happy hunting ground" in 2001, Polly traveled the U.S. and Canada full-time with Laurie and Richard before moving into Pioneer Cottages in 2003. Polly treasured her flower gardens, delighted in sharing her home grown produce with neighbors, enjoyed crafts (volunteered for many years in the Fergus craft store), and spent many hours on needlework. She was thrilled to present crocheted items to her children and grandchildren. A celebration of Polly's life will be held for family and friends at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 15 in the great room at Heartland Pioneer Cottage, 1315 Maybelle Avenue South, Fergus Falls MN. Dress casually and bring memories and stories to share. Assistance provided by Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls.
