Laura Spies

Laura J. Spies, 98, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls.

She was born June 18, 1915, on the Berg farm near Underwood, Minnesota, the daughter of Ole and Caroline (Widness) Berg. She graduated from Underwood High School and then Moorhead State Teachers College. She taught school for two years.

On June 8, 1939, she married George Spies at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Fergus Falls. She joined her husband in his business, Service Food, which they owned and operated until their retirement in 1976. The store has remained in the Spies family since their retirement. During their retirement Laura and George spent many winters in Sun City West, Arizona.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls.

Laura enjoyed reading, playing cards, travel, her home and her flowers. Laura will be remembered for her love of hot coffee and sweets, especially dark chocolate. Time spent with her family and grandchildren always brought her special joy, especially on holidays and Sundays at Otter Tail Lake.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, George; a daughter, Mary Gail Coleman; a grandson, Brent Spies; brothers Arnie I, Arnie II, Christian, Joe, and Orville; sisters, Josephine, Carrie, Florence, Mabel, and Elsie; and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Survivors include two sons, Gary (Sharon) Spies and David (Janice) Spies, all of Fergus Falls; eight grandchildren, Shelly (Brian) Suckow, Lana (Tim) Johnson, Amy (Kevin) King, Matthew (Julia) and Jonathan (Erin) Spies, Tom (Melanie), Sarah and Sean (Hira) Coleman; 12 great- grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Iva Berg and Ethel Spies; brother-in-law Merle Scott; and a son-in-law John Coleman.

Memorials are preferred to Pioneer Home Foundation or First Lutheran Foundation.
Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church
Service: 10 a.m. Saturday, September 14, 2013, at First Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls
Clergy: Reverends Saul Stensvaag and Harry Olson
Interment: St. Otto’s Catholic Cemetery in Fergus Falls
Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls is in charge of the arrangements.
