Kermit O. Kastella, 92, of Fergus Falls, died Friday, August 14, 2015, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls.
He was born January 16, 1923, in rural Wendell, Grant County, Minnesota, the youngest son of Martin and Emily (Holte) Kastella. He grew up on the family farm in Stony Brook Township.
A veteran of World War II, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1942, at the age of 19. He served in the South Pacific and was honorably discharged in 1948. He moved to Fergus Falls and on July 3, 1952, married Lorraine Hovland. Residing on the south side of Fergus Falls, the couple raised four sons.
For 31 years he worked for the State of Minnesota as a plumber at the Fergus Falls State Hospital, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, a Lifetime Member of Fergus Falls V.F.W., Eagles and Elks. He was named the Trustee Elk of the Year 1988-89.
He was always working, and was able to create something out of what seemed like nothing. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and summer camping with his family. Born from his service in the Navy, was his fascination with and enjoyment of aircraft, which continued throughout his life. And when asked, he was always willing to lend a helping hand.
