Keith McKay, 81 of Battle Lake, died Sunday, October 21, 2012, at Sanford Health in Fargo, North Dakota.
He was born June 25, 1931 in Madison, WI to Dean and Ruth (Corcoran) McKay. He was confirmed at St. Mary's Church at Westport,Wisconsin in 1944. He went to school at Madison East High. On December 6, 1948 he enlisted in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne and was sent to Camp Breckenridge Kentucky for his training. On May 19, 1950 he was honorably discharged out of Ft. Sheridan, IL.
He worked for Madison Gas & Light and Wisconsin Power Company trimming trees along the power lines throughout southern Wisconsin. In 1962 he moved to Arlington Heights, IL where he started up McKay Tree Service. In 1972 he sold his home and business and moved to Minnesota where he bought Sleepy Hollow Resort on Stalker Lake.
Keith sold the resort in 1979 and worked installing sewer systems and performed odd jobs such as plumbing and painting cabins. In 1986 he went to the Fergus Falls Community College and received his license in real estate. He worked for Dale Erks Realty in Battle Lake for 7 years, and Century 21 in Fergus Falls for 2 years. After 20 years in the business, he finished his real estate career with Stueve Realty in Battle Lake, retiring in November of 2006.
Keith loved bowling. At one time he bowled on four leagues in Battle Lake. He fished every chance he got and loved Stalker Lake. He enjoyed taking his grandchildren, Jamie and Josie, out in the boat and teaching them how to fish.
Keith loved the fall and spent many hours in the woods with his chain saw, cutting and splitting wood - he put up about 8 cords of wood each year. Keith was an avid ham radio operator (NØFKF) and was a member of the Lake Region Amateur Radio Club for many years
Keith is survived by the love of his life of 32 years, Joyce Cox of Stalker Lake, a sister Loveon Henke of Clearbrook, MN, and Vikki and Tim Sara of Alexandria, VA and their two children. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Norman, Robert and Leonard, and his sister, Helen.
A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. at the Tordenskjold Church Cemetery, 19528 County Highway 39, Underwood, MN, with Reverend Mark Johnson officiating. Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls is in charge of the arrangements.
