Kathryn Magdaline Rongstad, 97, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Thursday, September 3, 2009 at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls. She was born February 26, 1912, in Edmond County, South Dakota, the daughter of Reynold and Catherine (Johnley) Domde. At the age of three, Kathryn was legally adopted by Robert and Mary Leitch of Sverdrup Township, rural Underwood, Minnesota, and joined their family of five boys. She attended school in District 112, Underwood, and in Fergus Falls. Kathryn was baptized in South Dakota, and confirmed in the Lutheran church in Wahpeton. On October 14, 1939, she married Stanley Rongstad in Fergus Falls. Stan and Kathryn were transferred to Wahpeton, North Dakota in 1941 where Stanley became manager of the Lampert Lumber Yard. Since this was during World War II, Kathryn did hours of volunteer work with the Red Cross and became Chairman of the Surgical Dressings. In 1945, the Rongstads moved back to Fergus Falls. Stan became Regional Manager of western Minnesota for Lampert Lumber, and Kathryn worked as a server for ten years at the lovely River Inn. She was an active member of First Lutheran Church, and enjoyed Ladies Aide, Circle, and belonged to the Altar Guild for over twenty years. Kathryn was also a volunteer at the State Hospital for many years. She was a wonderful homemaker, cook, and gardener. She was known for growing beautiful begonias. Preceding her in death were her parents, and five brothers: Albert, William, Stanley, Otto, and Elmer Leitch. Survivors include her loving husband, Stanley, of Fergus Falls, and many nieces and nephews.
