Kathleen Wold

August 8, 1934 — February 6, 2024

Kathleen Kay Wold, 89, of Underwood, died Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Methodist Campus in Rochester.

Kathleen Joan (Viger) Wold was born August 8, 1934 in Pelican Rapids, MN to Nedgar and Agnes [Benson] Viger. They lived briefly in Battle Lake and then farmed on Ten Mile Lake south of Fergus Falls. She graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1952 and worked at Ottertail Power Company.

On November 26, 1955 she married Willard (Pete) Wold at Aastad Lutheran Church. They raised their children, Susan, Nancy and John while farming the Wold family farm north of Underwood, MN, where she lived until her death. She passed away on February 6, 2024 in Rochester, MN.

Life with Kay was a feast of loving care, welcome, church and community. Beginning in high school when Kay cared for her grandfather, she cared for a dozen or more elderly family members and neighbors. The welcome at the Wold farm was wide and warm, including, of course, her nieces and nephews, some of whom consider her a second "mom." It expanded to repair and delivery folks and everyone in between.

In summer the party moved to Pickerel Lake. The fourth of July and annual friends' picnics were highlights. Kay and Pete actively served Rindal and Sverdrup Lutheran Churches. She was organist, Sunday School superintendent and sewed and baked for annual fall festivals. Her generosity in sewing quilts for her family and Lutheran World Relief continued her entire life. She was a great neighbor and active in Homemakers, Study Club, and 4-H.

Life with Kay was a feast of food. Her orange rolls, barbecue ribs, peach pie, Christmas candy and Norwegian delicacies are legendary. The menu was colorful; the table set beautifully on linens she may have stitched and flowers she both grew and beautifully arranged.

Pete and Kay enjoyed Sundays at Pickerel Lake, trips to visit family, and they were especially thrilled to visit Norway. Travel both strengthened and expanded the "Friends Group."

She was preceded in death by parents, brother Donald, husband Pete, brother and sisters in law Julian, Judith, Muriel and Marilyn, a nephew and numerous aunts, uncles and friends.

She is survived by her children Susan (Paul) Wold Rohde, Nancy (Bruce) Rohde, John (Donna) Wold, nine grandchildren, Sarah (Andrew), Anna (John), Inga (Nick), Erik (Erin), Joshua (Sarah), Nicholas (Leslie), Becky (Tristan), Stephany, Andrew (Alexis), fifteen great grandchildren, her brother and "sisters" Richard and JoAnne Viger and Borghild Stenoien, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

The family thanks Lake Region Healthcare and the Mayo Clinic healthcare providers for exceptional care. Kay's wish was to donate her eyes, one brown and one blue, in hopes that another may see. Well done, good and faithful servant.

Memorials are preferred to Rindal Cemetery or Sverdrup WELCA.
