Karen Marie Kittelson, 62, of Fergus Falls, died Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls.
Karen was born on February 7, 1951 in Detroit Lakes, the daughter of Milton and Phyllis (Steffen) Totland. She grew up and attended school in Detroit Lakes, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1969. After high school she attended Moorhead State University and graduated in 1973 with a degree in elementary education.
On August 18, 1973 she married Lee Kittelson at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. The couple made their home in Fergus Falls where they raised their family. Karen was hired as an elementary school teacher in 1973 in Underwood and continued to teach there for 34 years, retiring in 2007.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls and Minnesota Educators Association. She enjoyed her family and many teacher friends from over the years. She also enjoyed shopping, baking, cooking, keeping a neat and tidy home, and collecting angel ornaments.
Preceding her in death was her father, Milton Totland.
Survivors include her husband, Lee of Fergus Falls; two sons, Brian (Julia) Kittelson of Rapid City, SD, and Mark (Alyssia) Kittelson of Fargo, ND; mother, Phyllis Totland of Detroit Lakes; two sisters, Kathy (Bruce) Jacobson of Makanda, IL, and Barb (Robert) Tomlinson of Sewell, NJ; and a brother, John (Carol) Totland of Fergus Falls.
Memorials are preferred to the Lake Region Healthcare Cancer Care and Research Center.
Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service, and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.
