June Shearer

June T. (Moen) Shearer, 81, a resident of Fergus Falls, died peacefully Friday, February 20, 2009, at her home surrounded by her loved ones and under the care of Lakeland Hospice after a nine year battle with cancer. She was born May 30, 1927, in Grand Forks, ND, the daughter of Theodore and Celestine (Strom) Moen. She graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1944. After graduation she attended the University of Minnesota for one year before attending the Fairview Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, MN, graduating in 1949.  While doing a nursing internship at the State Hospital in Fergus Falls, June met John Shearer, the love of her life. They were married on May 1, 1950 at Lake Nokomis Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. The couple had five children. June worked as a registered nurse for several years at the State Hospital in Fergus Falls, and then as an operating room nurse at Lake Region Hospital. In 1972 the couple moved from Fergus Falls to East Lost Lake in rural Underwood, and June worked as a head nurse at Otter Tail Lake Nursing Home, retiring from there in 1986. June’s hobbies included quilting, crocheting blankets, prayer shawls and hats for premature infants, reading, fishing, and playing cards. She was also a devoted member of Maine Presbyterian Church. She was a wonderful cook and loved to travel - visiting relatives all across the country.  She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends. Preceding her in death were her parents; a brother, Obert Moen, her twin sister, Jean (Moen) Smithson, her aunt Kathleen (Strom) McGaffy, and a granddaughter, Angela Steen. Survivors include her husband, John, of Fergus Falls; five children: Jan (Kevin) Leonard of Dewey, AZ, Jim Shearer of Tucson, AZ, (daughter-in-law Mary (Heinrich) Shearer of Grand Forks, ND), JoAnn (Mike) Steen of Evansville, Jeff (Sue) Shearer of Fargo, ND,  and Jodi (Jerry) Knutson of Fergus Falls; her sister, Margorie Krongard of Olympia, WA; 12 grandchildren: Joni (Daniel) Main, Jennifer Shearer, John Shearer, Matthew (Randee) Steen, Dianna Steen, Jason (Melissa) Shearer, Christopher Shearer, Carmen (John) Schroeder, LeAnn (Bill) Gifford, Stacy Fonder, Kaitlin Knutson and Emily Knutson; 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials are preferred to the Maine Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at Maine Presbyterian Church in Maine, with Reverend Glen Lord officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Silent Vale Cemetery, Maine. Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls is in charge of arrangements.
