John Donald Aune, 95, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at Lake Region Healthcare in Fergus Falls.
He was born on January 16, 1923, on the family farm in rural Underwood, to John and Inga (Aune) Aune. John grew up on the farm, and in 1945, he joined the United States Army and was trained as a medic. While in the Army, John contracted rheumatic fever and was medically discharged. He then returned to the family farm near Underwood.
On July 1, 1950, John married Beverly Salomonsen at Sverdrup Church in Underwood. Shortly after the couple married, he worked locally, and eventually began his career as a truck driver. The couple lived on Linwood Court in Fergus Falls and raised their family, and made many close friends.
John enjoyed trucking, mowing the grass at First Lutheran North Cemetery, cows and farming, gardening (especially potatoes and tomatoes), calling BINGO at the Pioneer home as a volunteer until his sight failed, and puttering in the garage workshop. John especially enjoyed babysitting, recording home videos, and playing with his grandchildren. He was very proud that he was able to teach his grandsons to hunt and shoot deer. John was fortunate to have taken 5 trips to Norway. He shared his amazing memory with details of the past, and always enjoyed celebrating Christmas with his neighbors on Linwood Court and putting up Christmas lights.
Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Inga; siblings, Lawrence Aune, Kathryn (Frank) Maiolini, Ruth (Charlie) Estes, Vernon (Helen) Aune, Ione (Dale) Klaessy, Gudrun (Herb) Otto, Charlotte Rhoades, James Aune; special nephew, Sam Klaessy; brother-in-law, Vernon Salomonsen; sister-in-law, Marilyn (Salomonsen) Marshall.
