Jerome Odin Toso, 88, of Rothsay, died Sunday, January 8, 2017, at Sanford Palliative Care in Fargo, ND.
Jerome was born on February 19, 1928, to Winfield and Elvine (Nordgaard) Toso in Rothsay. He attended country school in District # 27 through eighth grade and then served in the Army 24th Infantry Division, from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War. Following discharge from the army he attended agricultural school in Fergus Falls.
On May 16, 1953, Jerome was united in marriage to Joy Hammer in Rothsay. Early in their marriage Jerome and Joy operated a dairy farm, eventually transitioning it into a beef cow/calf and crop farm while raising their four young children. Eventually their son Stanley joined the farming operation and they farmed together for fifteen years prior to Stan’s declining health.
Jerome was a member of the Rothsay American Legion Post #376 and served as the Tanberg Township Treasurer for 50 years. Jerome received the Melvin Jones Award as a Lion’s member. He served as a director on the Rothsay Farmers Elevator Board for years and also served on committees & boards at Hamar Lutheran Church.
Although he enjoyed being a farmer, in his spare time he enjoyed taking many trips with Joy with some highlight trip destinations being Hawaii, Norway and Alaska. This past May he had the privilege of going on the Honor Flight Trip to Washington D.C. In his life time he enjoyed pheasant and deer hunting, wood working and keeping the farm yard neat. Jerome was a regular for morning coffee with friends at the Rothsay Truck Stop. Jerome and Joy always found the time and energy to attend their children’s, grandchildren’s and in recent years, great-grandchildren’s activities.
Jerome was a very patient, honest, hardworking man, with a good sense of humor. He was well respected by his family and community.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Winfield and Elvine Toso; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Seolien and Lida Hammer; a son, Stanley Jerome Toso in 2011; and two brothers, Wallace Toso and Norman Toso.
