Jerome Schroeder

August 23, 1915 — February 2, 2009

Jerome M. “Jerry” Schroeder, 93, a resident of Elizabeth, died Monday, February 2, 2009, at the Pelican Valley Health Center in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota.  He was born August 23, 1915, in Elizabeth, MN, the son of George and Martha (Maurin) Schroeder. He was baptized at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, and confirmed at the Cathedral in St. Cloud by Bishop Bush. He attended the Elizabeth grade school, and then attended St. John’s University Prep School for two years, and Fergus Falls High School for two years, graduating with the class of 1934.  After graduating from high school he remained at home, and with his mother operated the family farm, as his father had been killed in a farm accident. In 1949 they left the farm, and moved to a house in Elizabeth. He continued to farm for many more years, until 1980. In 1954 he became treasurer for the city of Elizabeth, a job he kept for 27 years, until 1981. During this time he also did the property assessing for the city for four years. He also started working at the State Hospital in Fergus Falls in 1954, retiring in 1976 after 22 years. Jerry was a member of the Eagles Club, the Elks Club, the Lions Club of Elizabeth, the Elizabeth Senior Citizens, and an Honorary Life member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 3118, of Fergus Falls. He was a lifelong member of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Elizabeth. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing country songs. Preceding him in death were his parents. Survivors include his extended family, many friends, and his church family. Visitation:  5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.
