Jeanette Nelson

Jeanette Nelson, 100, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Thursday, August 27, 2009, at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls. She was born December 19, 1908, in Underwood, Minnesota, the daughter of Nils and Oline (Mortenson) Olson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Jeanette attended grade school in Underwood, and then graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1926.  On November 13, 1927, she married Herbert L. Nelson at Tordenskjold Lutheran Church, rural Underwood. After their marriage they farmed in the Tordenskjold area for 21 years before moving to White Bear Lake, Minnesota, where Herbert did construction work for 18 years. When Herbert’s health began to fail, they returned to Fergus Falls in 1970. Herbert passed away in 1971.  After her husband’s death, Jeanette continued to live in Fergus Falls where she began her many years of volunteer work at Lake Region Hospital, the Otter Tail County Historical Society, and the Broen Memorial Home, as well as for the American Heart Association. She was a member of Tordenskjold Lutheran Church, participating in Ladies Aid. Jeanette loved sports and was a great Minnesota Twins fan, and also enjoyed watching the Minnesota Vikings. For many years after they were widowed, Jeanette and her sister, Dorothy, took many trips together. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Herbert, in 1971; an infant son and her little daughter, Joanne; her sisters, Nancy, Laura, Inga, Millie, Winnifred, and Dorothy; and a brother, Hardy. Survivors include her niece, Donna (Vernon) Johnson of Fergus Falls; her nephew, Warren Jenson of Ohio; her only cousin, Evelyn Mortenson of Underwood; and several great nieces and nephews. Memorials are preferred to the Lake Region Hospital Cancer Care and Research Center, the American Heart Association, and for the upkeep of the Tordenskjold Cemetery.
