Janice Gudmundson

Janice LaVonne (Johnson) Gudmundson, 80 of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, died Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at Lake Region Healthcare, Fergus Falls.

Janice was born on March 13, 1944, to Orvin T. and Nadine C. (Johnson) Johnson in Alexandria, MN.

She was baptized and confirmed at St. Petri Lutheran Church, Rural Brandon, MN.

Janice grew up on the family farm in Urness Township, Douglas County, MN. She attended Evansville Public School graduating in 1962. During her growing up years she was involved in 4-H and enjoyed the many aspects of the farm from gardening to animals and fieldwork. One of her favorite memories of her 4-H years was bringing her lamb to the MN State Fair.

After Graduation Janice attended Lutheran Bible Institute of Minnesota, University of Minnesota, and later St. Cloud State University. Janice moved to Fergus Falls and started working at the Fergus Falls State Hospital in 1968.

She met and fell in love with her future husband, Willis Gudmundson. They were married on October 18, 1970, at St Petri Lutheran Church, Rural Brandon, MN. They were happily married for 54 years; living in the Fergus Falls area and raising their three children.

Janice's strong faith was evident and was shown throughout her lifetime. She was a Sunday School teacher, served as varies roles for WMF, was a Stephen's Ministry Mentor, and participated in Bible Studies as members of Calvary Free Lutheran Church. One of her favorite memories she spoke of often was when she and Willis were Youth Leaders with all three kids involved; they attended the Free Lutheran Youth (FLY) Conference in Banff, Canada in 1989 as a family.

Janice's pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. Janice was able to stay at home with her children as they grew up. She enjoyed a career as a Case Aide worker for Otter Tail County for 22 ½ years once their children were in school full-time. She and Willis enjoyed spending time with their grandkids and their activities. She also enjoyed traveling, camping, flower gardening, quilting, scrapbooking, canning, and visiting with family and friends - The coffee pot was always on and warm conversations filled the room.

Janice also had a passion for genealogy. Janice authored several family history books which told of her Scandinavian Heritage; she belonged to Sons of Norway. One of her favorite times of the year was Christmas and passing on family Scandinavian traditions of the Christmas Eve Meal. Janice loved entertaining and hosting family get-togethers.

Janice is preceded in death by her parents, her infant sister, three brothers-in-laws Mike Kummrow, Elmer Plante, and Matt Jagol, nephew Johnny T. Johnson and several aunts and uncles.

She is survived by her husband, Willis Gudmundson, of Fergus Falls, MN, her three children: Rebecca (Brian) Janey, Crosby, MN, Brent (Holly) Gudmundson, New York Mills, MN and Brenda (Neil) Lindgren, Fergus Falls, MN, her four grandchildren: Jane Gudmundson, Ben Gudmundson, Alex Lindgren, and Libby Lindgren, Brother Gerald 'Jerry' (Cheryl) Johnson, of Evansville, MN, Sister Sharon Kummrow, of Evansville, MN, Two Aunts Louise Johnson and ViAnn Arneson both of Cannon Falls, MN, and many special cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2025 at Olson Funeral and Cremation in Fergus Falls, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will resume one-hour prior to the service at the church.

Service: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls.

Interment: Saint Petri Cemetery, Brandon, MN
