James “Jim” Reed, 63, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Tuesday August 8, 2017, at Lake Region Healthcare in Fergus Falls.
Jim was born on April 25, 1954, the son of Arthur Owen and Pearl J. (Kaltvedt) Reed in Fergus Falls.
He attended school in Fergus Falls.
On March 31, 1979, he married Cheryl (Berger) at Zion Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls.
Jim was a “jack-of-all trades”. Early in his career he worked for Knight’s Construction doing curb and gutter installation. Then, he and his brother, Stan, owned and operated Reed’s Construction for a few years. After that, he worked as a plumber at Fergus Plumbing and Knutson Heating until 1991 when he got hurt on the job. In his later years, he helped his son Chad with his lawn service business. He did this until his health declined.
In his younger years, he was a race car driver and won many local races. He was also an avid fisherman and hunter. During the spring and summer months he could be found in his boat out on the lake or in his camper. In the winter months, he enjoyed going deer and goose hunting with Chad and his friend Lonnie Mortenson and Lonnie’s son Dane. For many years, Jim also enjoyed working on cars with Chad and his longtime friend Rick Garza.
Preceding him in death were his parents, grandparents, and two infant children, as well as several aunts and uncles.
Survivors include his ex-wife and mother of his children, Cheryl of Fergus Falls; daughter, Christina (Barry) Summers of Fargo, ND; son, Chad Reed of Fergus Falls; grandchildren, Hailey and Hannah Thomas of Fargo, ND, Tabitha Summers of Fargo, ND; brothers, Melvin (Marlene) Reed of Fergus Falls, Stan (Linda) Reed of Walcott, IA; nephews, Kevin Reed of Walcott, IA, Mike Reed of Fergus Falls; niece, Amy Reed of Portland, OR; aunt, Grace Strass of Fergus Falls; and numerous cousins and friends.
Memorial Service: 2:00 PM Monday, August 14, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church in
Fergus Falls.
Clergy: Reverend Chris Eldredge
Interment: St. Johns Cemetery in Elizabeth, MN
