James Leon Hamer, age 78, of Ashby, died Sunday, August 7, 2016, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.
James was born on June 4, 1938, to James and Phyllis (Hartley) Hamer in Greenville, MI. He attended grade school at Greenville Elementary and graduated from Greenville High School. He was enlisted in in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1958 with the Atlantic Fleet.
On November 27, 1965, James married Janet Irene Grover in Riverdale, MI. He was a commercial truck driver from 1970 to 1992 for various companies. Later he was a newspaper delivery person for the Fergus Falls Daily Journal from 1992 to 1998, and enjoyed being a volunteer shuttle driver for Grant and Otter Tail Counties from 1998 to 2005.
Jim was a member of the Moose Lodge, Teamsters, the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association and the Fergus Falls American Legion Post #30. He enjoyed working in his shop, reading, playing guitar, spending time with his family and visiting with people.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Susan Hamer; and his brothers, Tony Hamer, Dale Hamer and Aaron Buchanan.
James is survived by his wife, Janet Hamer of Ashby; his sons, Jim (Molly) Hamer of Campbell, Joe (Krissy) Hamer of Cormorant, and Jason Hamer of Fargo, ND; his grandchildren, Branigan and Brodie Hamer of Campbell and Katlyn Hamer of Verndale; a brother, Bob Hamer of Utah; a sister, Jeanne LaBauve of LaMarque, TX; his niece, Michelle Dare of Galveston, TX; and many other nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 1:00-2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 16, 2016, at Peace United Methodist Church in Fergus Falls.
