James Richard Gustafson, 82, of Fergus Falls, died Thursday, September 12, 2013, at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls, where he recently became a resident.
He was born on December 29, 1929 near Park River in Kensington Township, Walsh County, North Dakota, the son of Martin Andrew & Borghild (Evenson) Gustafson. Jim joined the US Army in October of 1950 and was discharged in November of 1954. While in the service he was stationed at Camp Cook, Ca., Japan, Korea and Germany, and was discharged in November of 1954.
Jim lived in California for many years, where he worked as a farm hand, and came to Minnesota in 1996. For several years he resided in Mankato living at Cedar Haven. While in Mankato he belonged to the VFW, AA, the Evangelical Covenant Church, and was a former member of Calvary Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed woodworking and dancing.
Preceding him in death were his parents, two wives, and eight siblings, Muriel, Rhonda, Fern, Clara, Edith, Marlene, LeRoy and Francis.
Survivors include his son, Steven Gustafson, daughter, Sonja (Jerry) Hart, all of Las Vegas NV, and daughter Susan Fish of White Bear Lake and their families; one sister, Phyllis “Rosemary” Finneman of Nebraska, and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are friends Marcy & George Door of Fergus Falls.
Memorials are preferred to the Veterans Service Organization or the donor’s choice.
