Iva Berg, 99, died Friday, June 20, 2014, at PioneerCare, Fergus Falls.
She was born July 10, 1914, in Fergus Falls, the daughter of Thomas and Helen (Pember) Davis. She grew up in Maine Township, near Phelps Mill, where her father operated the Maine Store. Iva attended Fergus Falls High School through the 10th grade and then completed Normal Teachers training and became a teacher. She went on to complete her Bachelor’s Degree from Moorhead State College in 1972.
In 1942, she enlisted in the S.P.A.R.S. (female division of the coast guard) and served as the secretary to the commanding officer in San Francisco. She was discharged in February of 1946.
On May 28, 1946, she married Orville Berg. They resided on the Berg family farm, rural Underwood, until the Fall of 2005. For over 30 years she taught elementary school in Battle Lake.
Iva was an avid card and board game player, enjoyed dancing, loved to read, was a member of the Underwood American Legion Auxiliary, Underwood Women’s Study Club and the ladies groups of the Maine Presbyterian church. She was known for her wit and candor and was a very smart lady with a knack for remembering things.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; and a brother, Dick Davis.
Survivors include her daughter, Bonnie Berg of Virginia Beach, VA; her son, Kim Berg of South Dakota; four grandchildren, Katie (Luke) Evenson, David Berg, Andrew Berg and Christine McBride, along with several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and countless close friends.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2014 at Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls and one hour prior to the service at the church.
