Irene Meis

Irene Lucille Meis, 76, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at the Broen Home in Fergus Falls.

She was born October 29, 1936, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, the daughter of Arthur and Palma (Rovang) Erlandson. She grew up in rural Fergus Falls where she attended rural school in the Bergerud District #1447, and then the West Central School of Agriculture in Morris, graduating in 1955.

On March 14, 1959 she married Darrell Meis at Aastad Lutheran Church, rural Fergus Falls. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Lake Region Hospital before becoming a stay at home mom and housewife. The family resided on their farm in Western Township near Orwell Dam, where they raised pigs and various crops.

She was a lifelong member of Aastad Lutheran Church, and a member of the Eagle’s Auxiliary for 32 years, holding various offices, and the American Legion Auxiliary for 12 years.

Irene loved baking, visiting with friends and relatives, participating in church activities, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her husband of 48 years, Darrell, who passed away on January 25, 2008, a brother, Merle Erlandson, her parents, and a great-grandson, Charlie Jason Laffen.

Survivors include her four children: Les (Judy) Meis, and Donovan “Donnie” Meis, all of Fergus Falls, Duane (Nina) Meis of Moorhead, and Lynn (Angus) Harris of Fort Worth TX; eight grandchildren: Darrick (Amanda Johnson) Meis, Ashley (Jason) Laffen, Ryan Meis, Katie Meis, Kelsey Meis, Zachery Harris, Alex Harris, and Spencer Harris; one great-grandchild, Emme Laffen; a sister-in-law Janis Erlandson of Fergus Falls; brother-in-law Robert (Barbara) Meis of Fergus Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church
Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Aastad Lutheran Church, rural Fergus Falls
Clergy: Reverend Dan Cole and Reverend Tom Gard
Interment: Aastad Lutheran Cemetery, rural Fergus Falls
