Ida Umlauf

Ida Anna Emma Umlauf, 98, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Sunday, September 13, 2009 at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls. She was born August 28, 1911, at her family home in Fredricksburg, Iowa, one of eight children born to William and Augusta (Schutte) Block. In 1916, when Ida was five years old, her family moved by train to a farm near Rothsay, Minnesota. She attended a rural school and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Hamar Church in Rothsay. In her teenage years she worked as a housekeeper and nanny for area families.  On June 30, 1934, she married Raymond Umlauf in Fergus Falls.  The couple farmed together near Rothsay. Ida was a member of the Homemakers Club and participated in Ladies Aid. She enjoyed gardening, baking, crocheting, raising chickens, cooking, canning and freezing, sewing, and doing word-find puzzles. Preceding her in death were her husband, Raymond, in 1989; her parents; two brothers, Arnold and Elmer; three sisters: Viola and Hildegaard Block, and Amanda Jacobs; a great-grandson, Chance Olson; three brothers-in-law, Ervin Umlauf, Albert Jacobs and Eldon Umlauf; and two sisters-in-law, Donna Umlauf and Olena Block. Survivors include her daughter, Darlene (Harvey) Aasness of Fergus Falls; five grandchildren: Jacqueline (Jamie) Olson, William (Deanna) Aasness, Cary (Anita) Aasness, Kevin (Marcia) Aasness and Peter (Melody) Aasness;  12 great-grandchildren: Amanda (Trent) Kadel, Megan (Chris) Hanson, Cody Aasness, Austin Aasness, Alisha Aasness, Kayla Aasness, Krista Aasness, Kenzie Aasness, Krosby Aasness, Melissa Aasness, Michael Aasness, and Madison Olson; two great-great grandchildren: Mason and Peyton Kadel; and two sisters:  Verna (Kenneth) Link of Underwood, and Irene Umlauf of Fergus Falls.
