Howard M. Hovland, 78, a resident of Columbia Heights, formerly of Dalton, died Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the Crestview Lutheran Home in Columbia Heights. He was born on November 22, 1929 in Fergus Falls, the son of Melvin and Olga (Sivertson) Hovland. He was baptized and confirmed at Swan Lake Lutheran Church. He grew up in rural Underwood and attended District 43 School. He also attended the Agriculture School in Morris. In 1951, Howard entered the United States Air Force and served his country during the Korean War until he was discharged in 1954. On October 12, 1952, he married Wilma Jean Tucker in Sacramento, CA. After the couple married they moved to Mounds View, MN. Howard worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for over 20 years. Howard was a member at Our Savior’s Ten Mile Lake Lutheran Church in Dalton and the Dalton American Legion. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Preceding him in death were his parents; three sisters, Verna, Clarice, Dorothy; and one brother, David. Survivors include his wife, Wilma Jean of Columbia Heights; two children, Wesley (Penny) Hovland of Blaine and Glenna LaMere of Fergus Falls; six grandchildren: Jonathan of Mounds View, Cecilia (Joe) Andrade of Spring Lake Park, Richard Hovland of Blaine, Eric LaMere of Ham Lake, Nick LaMere of Ham Lake and Ryan LaMere of Fergus Falls; and two sisters, Ruth (Marion) Bouton and Marie (Jim) McKinney both of Phoenix, AZ. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday with a 6:30 p.m. public prayer service at the funeral home. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Our Savior’s Ten Mile Lake Church in Dalton.
