Hjordis Jannette (Jorve) Skugrud, 86, a resident of Fergus Falls, formerly of Rothsay, died Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at Alcott Manor in Fergus Falls. She was born January 12, 1921, in Halstad, Minnesota, the daughter of Alfred and Hazel (Hammer) Jovre. She spent her childhood at Halstad, graduating with the High School Class of 1939. Hjordis attended Moorhead State College, graduating in 1943. On April 6, 1944, she married Erling Skugrud at the Fort Snelling Chapel. She taught school at both Grand Forks and West Fargo. Hjordis spent most of her life in Rothsay, where she was a member of the Hamar Lutheran Church and was active in Ladies Aid, Study Club, Dorcas Society, Homemakers Club, Bible study, Cub Scouts, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Her other interests and hobbies were genealogy, reading, quilting, crocheting, spending summers at the cabin on Lake Lida, and gardening. She felt as though all of Rothsay was her family. Preceding her in death were her husband, Erling in November of 1992; son, John, in June of 1996; her father, Alfred, in 1931; her mother, Hazel, in 1993; brothers: Donald in 1944, and Robert in 1993; and a sister, Arlene in July of 2001. Survivors include her sister, Alda Rydin of Sleepy Eye; sons: Roger (Karen) Skugrud of Winona, and Mark Skugrud of Mendota Heights; six grandchildren: Kelly, Joren, Kyle, Bjorn, Jacob (Tahroma) and Karlyn (Jason Kellogg) Skugrud; as well as four nieces. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to PARTNERS in Rothsay or the New Life Parish in Rothsay. Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church.
