Helga Hammond, 86, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Sunday, October 07, 2007 at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls. She was born January 27, 1921, in Portland, North Dakota, the daughter of Pedar and Inga (Televik) Overby. She attended school in Portland. Helga worked as a nanny/housekeeper in Coos Bay, Oregon. She then worked for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Washington until she met Harry. They were married March 28, 1943, in Mt. Vernon, Washington. After their marriage she worked with Harry in his business, doing bookkeeping and taking phone calls for the business. She also did volunteer work at the Broen Home. Helga was a member of the Sons of Norway for more than 30 years. She was the first woman president of the Sons of Norway, Fergus Falls Lodge. She was also an active member of the Y's Folks in Fergus Falls. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing. She and Harry enjoyed fishing together. She also enjoyed square dancing and old-time dancing, and camping. She traveled to many different areas of the U.S., Canada, Alaska and Norway. Preceding her in death were her husband, Alfred Harry Hammond; her parents and grandparents; brothers: James Overby, Carl Overby, and Jacob Overby; a sister, Myrtle Engen; and an infant daughter, Luana Sue Hammond. Survivors include two daughters: Madeline (Werner) Simon of Bloomington, MN, and Kathleen (Allan) Krog of rural Underwood; a son, Neal Hammond of Fergus Falls; grandchildren: Toby Lien and Sonja Lien of Fridley, MN, Andrea Miller of Brooklyn, New York, Maureen (Dan) Hunt of Minneapolis, MN, and Nicole (Justin) Bottsford-Miller of Durham, North Carolina; great-granddaughters, Leina Hunt and Madeline Hunt of Minneapolis; and several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Light and Life Auditorium of the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls with Chaplain Ken Austin officiating.
