As the sun was setting, the evening of August 11, 2015, Hazel Pauline Stubbs passed away under hospice care at the Life Song Residence in Fergus Falls. She was 99 and just a few short months shy of her 100th birthday.
Hazel was born on October 28, 1915 in Dane Prairie Township, near Underwood, the daughter of Andrew and Martha (Harthun) Haave. She spent her early childhood years in that area but later moved with her parents to the family farm in Carlisle Township in 1934. She attended country school and later attended high school in Fergus Falls where she graduated in 1935.
After high school, Hazel worked for a number of families in the Kenwood area of Minneapolis. During that time she met Norvell Stubbs. On February 27, 1944, she married Norvell in Minneapolis. The couple was married for 59 years.
In 1946 after Norvell’s discharge from the Navy, the couple moved to Fergus Falls. They attended First Lutheran Church, where Hazel was a member of the ladies aid.
After 31 years in Fergus Falls, she and Norvell sold their home in Fergus Falls and built and moved to their new home on Stony Point of West Battle Lake. Both were avid gardeners and Hazel canned and preserved the bounty from their garden. During that time, they were members of First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake. In 2001 Hazel moved back to Fergus Falls to live at the Sheridan House where she could be close to Norvell who was living at the Broen Memorial Home. She also lived at Park Gardens, Mill Street Residence and most recently Life Song Residence.
The family would like to thank Tim and Marlys Hamilton for their loving care of Hazel while she was living at the Life Song Residence.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Norvell, who died in 2003; brothers, Ralph, Wallace and Wesley and sister, Sylvia.
Survivors include her daughters, Sandra (Guy) Crawford of Minneapolis and Susan Stubbs of Seattle, Washington; one granddaughter, Sara Crawford and her husband Mitch Feinberg of Bethlehem, CT. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Shirley Haave of Fergus Falls, 4 nieces, 2 nephews and a long-time friend and companion, Joyce Bjorklund of Fergus Falls.
