Hazel Nelson, age 88, of Aurdal Township rural Fergus Falls died Saturday morning, August 23, 2014, at the Broen Home in Fergus Falls.
She was born on June 13, 1926 in Oscar Township near Carlisle, MN, the daughter of Oscar and Viola (Halderson) Mortenson. Hazel graduated from Fergus Falls High School with the Class of 1944.
On June 14, 1947 she married Milford C. Nelson at Hedemarken Lutheran Church near Carlisle. Their wedding date was chosen to satisfy a bet that she would be twenty one when she got married. The couple had two sons; Bruce and Russell. Hazel was a homemaker, a cook for the Highway Inn and Northern Aire Lanes Bowling Alley and a ‘bushelman’ for Rosenblatt’s. In that role she fixed many flaws and retired after 23 years. Another role she is known for is her cake baking skills. She created many cakes for weddings and special events of family and friends. She was a member of Aurdal Lutheran Church in rural Fergus Falls and the Aurdal Church Women.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Milford on February 21, 2008, a sister, Eleanor (George) Schauff, brother, Norman (Alvina) Mortenson, Milford’s sister and her husband, Imogene (Earl) Mitchell and a nephew, Bob Schauff.
Survivors include her sons, Bruce K. (Cora) and Russell C. Nelson all of Fergus Falls, her grandchildren Crystal of Fargo, ND and Brent of Fergus Falls, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: Tuesday, August 26 from 5 to7 pm at the Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls and one hour prior to the service at the church
Services: Wednesday, August 27 at 2:00 pm at the Aurdal Lutheran Church rural Fergus Falls.
