Hazel Carlson

Hazel Jeannette Carlson, 96, Sturgis, died Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at the Sturgis Regional Care Center, in Sturgis, South Dakota. Hazel was born July 14, 1915, in Fergus Falls, MN, to Joseph and Anna (Bundtzen) Homes. She graduated high school at the age of sixteen in Fergus Falls and worked at Woolworth's Five and Dime. During World War II she worked at the Fergus Falls Creamery. She married Clare A. Carlson in Sisseton, SD, on July 21, 1935. During the course of their marriage, Clare and Hazel lived in Fergus Falls, MN, Racine, WI, Greendale, WI, Menasha, WI, Waupaca, WI, Neillsville, WI, Tomah, WI, and Webster, SD. She worked as a bookkeeper and cashier for her husband when they owned and operated Red Owl grocery stores. They spent their retirement years in Sebring, FL. After her husband’s death in 1986, Hazel continued to live in Sebring until 2003 when she moved to Sturgis, SD. In the fall of 2006, she moved to an assisted living facility in Spearfish before returning to Sturgis where she had been living at the time of her death. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and also served as president of the Ladies Aid at St. John's Lutheran Church in Webster. She loved to play bridge and belonged to several bridge clubs. She also was a member of the country club and enjoyed golf. Her other avid hobbies included doing macramé and crocheting afghans and dolls for friends and family. Survivors include her sons, Larry D. (Diane) Carlson, Lennox, SD, and Richard C. (Linda) Carlson, West Windsor, NJ; daughters, JoAnn L. Klein, Aberdeen, SD, amd Kathie M. (Bruce) Flagstad, Sturgis; 10 grandchildren, Linda (Mark) Schelske, Roger (Janet) Carlson, Kim (Mike) Cashman, Chris (Tammy) Klein, Kirsten Flagstad, Deric Flagstad, Danika (Robert) Adamove, Emily Carlson, Andrew Carlson, and Abigail Carlson; 12 great-grandchildren, Aaron (Melanie) Schelske, Sarah (Jon) Small, Adam Schelske, Leah Schelske, Colton (Cody) Cashman, Rachel Klein, Ryan Klein, Aidan Johnson, Ava Adamove, Rebecca Carlson, Rachel Carlson, and Jacob Carlson; and five great-great-grandchildren, Cadee Schelske, Mason Schelske, Emilee Small, Karlee Small, Tucker Small. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clare; two brothers, Arnold and Lyle Homes; two sisters, Caroline Aune and Irene Thompson; and son-in-law, Harold Klein. A memorial has been established to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Whitewood, South Dakota. Visitation will be noon until 9:00 p.m. on Friday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2012, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Whitewood, South Dakota with Pastor David Baer officiating. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday April 16, 2012, at the Bethlehem Cemetery in Fergus Falls, MN. Local arrangements provided by Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls.
