Harley Kantrud

July 13, 1918 — March 9, 2008

Harley A. Kantrud, 89, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Sunday, March 9, 2008, at the Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. He was born July 13, 1918 in Trondhjem Township of Otter Tail County, the son of Edwin and Minnie (Granrud) Kantrud. He was baptized and confirmed in Norwegian at South Immanuel Lutheran Church. He attended country school in Trondhjem Township. On April 5, 1942, Harley married Lorraine Toso at Bagstevold Lutheran Church in Erhard, MN. He was drafted in the United States Army on April 10, 1942. He received an Honorable Medical Discharge in February, 1943. Harley and Lorraine were blessed with four children. Harley had several interesting occupations that took his family to many places before they resettled in Fergus Falls in 1956. They included managing a Dairy Queen in Milwaukee, WI, the Spot Light Night Club in Detroit Lakes, and co-owner of K & T Auto Sales in Erhard. He was employed by Coast-to-Coast Stores, National Tea Packing Plant and retired from Independent School District #544. He was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 30, the Eagles, Sno Eagles Club and the Senior Citizens Center. Harley enjoyed golfing, snowmobiling, camping, dancing and telling stories in Norwegian. He was very creative and artistic. Spending time with family and friends was very important to Harley. Preceding him in death were his parents and his brothers Ernest and Chester. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Lorraine, of Fergus Falls; their children, Larry (Karen) of Fergus Falls, Kathryn Kay (Mike) Dahl of Moorhead, Jane (The Reverend Scott) Anderson of Ft. Collins, CO, and David (Becky) of Fergus Falls; nine grandchildren: Kari, Kelly, Heidi, Jessi, Molly, Amber, Matthew, Ryan and Katie; 17 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Luella Kantrud and Georgia Kantrud.
