Gladys Allen

Gladys Mabel Allen, 96, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Sunday, March 16, 2008, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. She was born January 7, 1912 in rural South Dakota to John and Anna (Boelke) Holst. She graduated from high school in Hankinson, ND in 1929. She went on to attend Valley City State College and graduated with the Class of 1932. For several years she taught in rural schools in both North and South Dakota. Later she spent five years teaching in the Claire Ann Shover Nursery School as well as spending 17 years in the Fergus Falls School District as a kindergarten teacher at Jefferson Elementary. On January 2, 1934 she married Maurice Allen in Watertown, SD. Her husband preceded her in death on February 16th, 1979. Gladys was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and served on a number of commissions. Her family, her faith and her church were all very important to her. Others preceding her in death include her parents, a daughter Jean Nelson, in February of 2004 and five brothers and five sisters. Survivors include a son Paul of Indianapolis, Indiana, seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, and a son-in-law, Ron Nelson of Loveland, CO. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Grace United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 1100 Friberg Avenue, Fergus Falls MN 56537. Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.
