Geraldine (Gerry) Myrna Bergquist Preston, 84, a resident of Fergus Falls, went to be with the Lord on June 22, 2013 at the Woodland Lodge.
She was born August 13, 1928, in Foxhome, Minnesota, the daughter of William C. Bergquist and Margaret A. (Roskopf) Bergquist. Gerry attended school in Foxhome and later graduated from high school in Breckenridge. She attended a hair stylist school in Minneapolis and then returned to Fergus Falls where she worked at Ina’s Beauty Shop.
In 1949, she married Calvin Preston. They celebrated 64 years of marriage on February 26, 2013. The couple farmed on their Jewett Lake homestead. Gerry was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church in Elizabeth where she taught Sunday school and was active in the church’s Ladies Aid. Later she became a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and was involved in a Life Ministries group. She had a heart for children in need and not only adopted a child from Korea but also made two trips overseas to help in the adoption of other children. She found great joy in making her home a place of refuge and hospitality for family, friends and foster children. She was known for her love of gardening, cooking and feeding whoever walked through the door by putting more “potatoes” in the pot. She enjoyed traveling and her fondest memory was taking the entire family to Disney World followed by a cruise for their fiftieth wedding anniversary.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lowell and Albert “Abby” Bergquist; granddaughter, Eva Marie and step father, Harold Ackert.
Survivors include her husband Calvin of Fergus Falls; four sons and two daughters: Gary (Elaine) of Fergus Falls, Vince (Pam) of Frederick, CO, Randy (Wendy) of Rochester, MN, Wayne (DeAnn) of Fergus Falls, Lisa Langston of Fergus Falls, and Aimee Preston of Fergus Falls; 25 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and an aunt, Myrt Bergquist.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday with a public prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.
