Francis Lankow

Francis Robert Lankow, 84, of Underwood, died Monday, September 9, 2013, at his home.

He was born September 6, 1929, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, the son of Henry and Jessie (Martin) Lankow. He was baptized and confirmed at the Foxhome Methodist Church. He grew up in Sunnyside Township, attending country school. He then attended high school in Campbell, where he graduated. Following graduation he helped out on the family farm.

On June 15, 1952, he married Virginia Martinson at Foxhome Lutheran Church. The couple resided on the family farm until moving to the farm near Rothsay in 1956. The couple moved to South Turtle Lake in 1985, spending their winters in Mesa, Arizona. He retired from farming in 1991.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake, Hamar Lutheran Church in Rothsay, and served on the Church Council, the Akron Town Board, the Truck Committee for Minn-Dak, and was a member of the NRA.

Francis enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and fishing, building and working on projects, using his sawmill, and for a time, a snowmobile business. In his younger years he enjoyed playing baseball and football. He was happiest when he was helping out others and his family.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a son, Greg, and his brothers, Raymond and Cecil Lankow.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia, of Underwood; his children: Gayle (Greta) Lankow of Dawson MN, Gary (Becky) Lankow of Tenney MN, Glenn (Tamera) Lankow of Rothsay, and Jean (Dan) Smith of Louisville KY; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his brother, Henry Lankow of Cedar Rapids IA; five sisters: Mae Heideman of Breckenridge, Beatrice Kusch of Cedar Rapids IA, Marilyn (Alwyn) Martinson of Vergas, Artis (Gordon) Martinson of Breckenridge, and Phyllis (Bert) Heideman of Wahpeton; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Memorials are preferred to the organization of the donor’s choice.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service, and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church
Service: 11 a.m. Friday, September 13, 2013, at First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake
Clergy: Reverend Jake Dyrhaug
Interment: Hamar Cemetery, Rothsay, Minnesota
