F. Eileen Smith, age 100, a resident of Fergus Falls, and formerly of Huron, South Dakota, died Monday, May 11, 2009, at the Pioneer Retirement Community in Fergus Falls. She was born August 24, 1908, in Haileybury, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Robert Arthur and Florence Augusta (Annett) Cowling. She graduated from Hibbing High School in 1925 and attended Hibbing Junior College and Huron College. She worked as a bookkeeper before her marriage. On August 23, 1932, she married Edward William Smith in Huron, South Dakota. She was a homemaker for 69 years. Eileen was a member of AICC Study Club, Mothers Club, and Grace Church Episcopal in Huron, SD where she was active in Altar Guild, St. Martha’s Guild, choir, and a lector. She was also an election judge for many years, and served as a Brownie leader. She was a talented pianist, and enjoyed gardening, bridge and other card games, crossword puzzles and other word games, and reading books of all genres. Preceding her in death were her husband, Edward; her parents; her siblings: R. Mervyn Cowling, Marjorie Cowling, Stephanie Meyer and Edytha Keller; a son-in-law, Jack Mann; and a foster sister, Sadie Golding. Survivors include two daughters, Stephanie Mann of Shoreview, MN, and Linda (David) Waring of Fergus Falls, MN; five grandchildren: Stephen (Sue) Mann of Annandale, MN, Richard Mann of Shoreview, MN, Michael Mann of Maplewood, MN, Christopher Waring of Chicago, IL, and Robin (Kris) Werner of Fergus Falls, MN; four great-grandchildren: Justin Mann, Eric Mann, Alise Werner and Emily Werner; two sisters-in-law, Jeanne Bauder and Aletha Tillman and a brother-in-law, Wm. F. Smith, all of Huron, SD; and her special friend, Deane Williams of Fergus Falls, MN. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Pioneer Retirement Community Chapel in Fergus Falls.
