Anna Evelyn Thoreson, 96, a resident of Pelican Rapids, died Saturday, May 5, 2018.
She was born on September 7, 1921, to Emil and Linda (Granstrom) Olson in Pelican Rapids, MN. Evelyn was baptized and confirmed at Central Swede Grove Lutheran Church. In 1939, she graduated from Pelican Rapids High School and then attended Interstate Business College and worked in secretarial positions.
On November 16, 1947, Evelyn married Abner Thoreson. They made their home in Bison, SD, Virginia, Grand Rapids, and Elk River, MN, Brasilia, Brazil, South America, Dhaka, Bangladesh, Asia, Jackson, Michigan, and Pelican Rapids.
Evelyn was on the Minnesota Synodical LCW board and the Foster-children program of Itasca County. She was an active participant in the churches wherever they lived.
Niece Joanna did an excellent job in explaining Evelyn's life in this way: "Fording rivers in Western South Dakota in the late '40s and living in third-world countries in the '70s. Hearing civil rights legislation being argued live on the national level and listening to Marion Anderson sing. Doing a lot of parenting without being a biological mother. Showing compassion for the poor children of the world and taking disadvantaged teenagers into her home. Never giving up real butter, whipping cream and eggs. What gracious, wonderful meals she served; not a paper plate or Styrofoam cup ever! She had a "world-view" and realized that her neighbors were more than just the people that lived within a five-mile radius." All of her family will miss her greatly.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Emil and Linda Olson; her husband, Abner in 2013; sister and brother-in-law, Delores and Gail Heusser; brother, Carlton Olson; brother and sister-in-law, Myron and Ethel Olson; and a host of dear friends.
Survivors include many loved nieces and nephews.
