Eugene Thompson, 72, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Thursday, December 6, 2012, at his home under the care of his son, Michael and Lakeland Hospice.
He was born January 16, 1940, in rural Fergus Falls, the son of Julius and Agnes (Hanson) Thompson. He attended school at District 6 in Eagle Lake Township until 1951 and then attended Fergus Falls Public Schools.
For several summers he worked for his aunt and uncle, Clifford and Fern Hanson, near Vergas. In February of 1959, Eugene joined the Army, serving in Japan and Korea. He was discharged in May of 1962 and moved to Minneapolis until April of 1971. He then moved to Fergus Falls and was married to Mary Steen in April of 1982. Their son, Michael, was born in 1984.
Eugene was involved in Beginning Experience and AA. He was a sign painter, auto mechanic and a car salesman. He enjoyed the outdoors, spending time cutting wood, deer hunting, and fishing, both summer and winter spear fishing. He especially enjoyed getting into “fishing competitions” with friends and family.
Survivors include his son, Michael and his fiancée, Ashley, and their children, Jeremiah, Aidan and Evelynn; his siblings, Judith (Frank) Hensch of Campbell, Richard (Ruth) Thompson of Brandon, Margaret Leidal of Missouri, Robert (Joanne) Thompson of Utah, Joan (Larry) Steeves of Rush City, Jerome Thompson of Virginia, Mary Ann (Tom) Berryman of Palisade, Lynn (Cliff) Leegard of Illinois, Marcia Barrett of Oregon and Jeffrey (Bonnie) Thompson of Richville; numerous nieces and nephews and a son Tom Hanson of Fargo, who recently found his birth father. His parents preceded him in death.
Memorials are preferred to Lakeland Hospice, Fergus Falls.
A family service will be held at a later date. Olson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls is in charge of arrangements.
