Eugene “Beanie” V. Johnson, age 87, of Fergus Falls, died on Thursday, December 10, 2015, at PioneerCare with family at his side.
Eugene was born on April 15, 1928, in Carlisle Township, rural Fergus Falls, the son of Phillip and Dolpha (Carlson) Johnson. He grew up in Carlisle Township on the family farm and attended country school.
On September 28, 1957, he was married to LaVon Jane Olson at the Alliance Church in Battle Lake. The couple resided in rural Fergus Falls on the family farm and raised their four children, Mardell, Valdene, Ross and Linda. Beanie was a grain farmer and raised livestock and dairy cattle. He resided on the family farm until 2009, at which time he moved to PioneerCare in Fergus Falls.
Beanie was a member of Rothsay Baptist Church, former member of the Rothsay Lions Club and Sons of Norway. He was also a former board member of the Rothsay Farmers Co-Op and Oscar Park Mutual Insurance Company. Beanie played the accordion and LaVon played the piano and together they entertained at special events and church activities. They were “regulars” at Lenny’s Dance Barn in rural Fergus Falls and the Galaxy in Barnesville.
Beanie enjoyed spending time with his family and extended family. He spent many hours visiting with friends around the coffee table at the Rothsay Truck Stop. He liked to hunt and enjoyed fishing trips to Canada. Beanie had a special place in his heart for his St. Bernard dogs and he will be fondly remembered for his quick wit, humor and practical jokes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Dolpha Johnson; his wife, LaVon Johnson; a brother, James (LaVerne) Johnson; and a son-in-law, Richard Blondeau.
He is survived by his children, Mardell Hanstad of Atlanta, GA, Valdene (Ricky) Teal of Atlanta, GA, Ross (Lisa) Johnson of Fergus Falls and Linda Blondeau of Fergus Falls; seven grandchildren, Jeremy (Cara) Hanstad, Tyler and Tanya Hanstad, Shana and Tanner Johnson and Jaden and Jon Blondeau; two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Luke Hanstad; also survived by his sister, Marjorie (David) Brown of Fargo, ND; Anders and StineLil Th¢rod and their family of Norway, who came as a farm trainee and became special members of the Johnson family.
Visitation: 4:30-7:00 PM on Monday, December 14, 2015, at the Olson Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 6:30. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
