Eugene Lee “Gene” Balken, 61, a resident of Rothsay, died Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at home with his daughters and loved ones by his side. Gene was born on June 30, 1950, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota the son of Roy and Ione (Lein) Balken. He graduated from Rothsay High School in 1969. He attended Moorhead State University of Minnesota, earning an Economics, Mathematics, and secondary teaching degree with a minor in computer. In 1979 he married Cheri Froemke of Lisbon, North Dakota. They lived and raised their children in Fargo, ND. Gene had many occupations throughout his life, but was always a farmer and carpenter. He was a hard worker, and always had a “project” he was working on. He had many close friends and relatives, and was always willing to donate his services or borrow a tool to anyone who asked. He loved farming and carpentry, playing cards, and visiting with friends and family. He was a great father and dedicated husband. He will always be remembered for his smile, generosity, friendship, stories, and big heart. Preceding him in death were his parents, Roy and Ione Balken, his wife, Cheri Balken, and many other family members and friends. Gene is survived by his two daughters: Nicole (Nick) Majerus of Rothsay, and Jenna (Tyson) Trosvik of Rothsay; his brother, Lynn (Sue) Balken of Fergus Falls; and many close cousins, family, and friends. Visitation: 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2011 with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at New Life Lutheran Church, Rothsay, and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.
