Elder Engebretson, 90, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Thursday, January 10, 2008, at the Pioneer Retirement Community in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. He was born June 29, 1917, in Havre, Montana, the son of Gustav and Katherine (Torgusson) Engebretson. He attended school in rural Aurdal Township near Fergus Falls through the eighth grade. He farmed with his dad on several farms in the area. On June 17, 1944, he married Merelle Gronner in Underwood, Minnesota. He and Merelle lived on a farm north of Underwood until 1950. They then moved to a farm north of Fergus Falls, which is now Woodland Heights. In 1964 they moved a mile further north to the farm on which he worked until he retired from farming. Elder enjoyed his life of farming, so it was difficult for him to quit. He and Merelle joined the Federated Church in 1950, and he served as an usher for many years. He was also a member of the Elks and the Eagles Club. Elder was a member of two bowling leagues for many years. He was on the city horseshoe team, where he was the youngest member at age 75. He also played on several softball leagues in the area. Elder loved music and as a young man he played the trombone. At the age of 18 he started playing the accordion. After just six lessons he entered a music contest and won 1st prize. Everyone enjoyed listening to him play the accordion. Elder also enjoyed raising registered German Shepherd dogs for many years. Preceding him in death were his parents. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Merelle Engebretson, of Underwood; his children: Laurel (Laurie) E. Henry of Fergus Falls, Daniel J. Engebretson of Erhard, and Bruce E. Engebretson of Fergus Falls; his grandchildren: Erik Henry, Linnea Henry and Katelyn Engebretson, all of Fergus Falls; and a great-grandson, Ty Mitchel Henry/Holte of Fergus Falls.
