Eddie Flatin

E. Clifford Flatin, 92, of Fergus Falls, formerly of Rothsay, died Saturday, October 24, 2009, at the Pioneer Retirement Community in Fergus Falls. He was born February 18, 1917, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, the son of Lewis and Mathedia (Wee) Flatin. He was raised by his grandmother, Kären Wee after the death of his mother at the age of two months. He worked with Ed Wee on the farm and was employed at International Harvester and the Farmers Elevator in Rothsay, Minnesota from 1953 to 1980. He also worked for Sonny Nord driving school buses, and enjoyed the children he worked with. He married Ruth Margaret Varholdt on December 30, 1938. Ruth passed away on April 2, 1989.  On June 22, 1991, he married Margaret Kiesz.  Clifford volunteered at Dakota Clinic, giving their patients transportation rides in a golf cart to their appointments. He was a lifetime member of Hamar Lutheran Church in Rothsay, and was also a member of the Rothsay Fire Department and the Lions Club. Survivors include his wife, Margaret, of Moorhead, and her children; two daughters, Virginia (Dewey) Tommerdahl of Fergus Falls, and Kay (Duane) Grunewald of Thompson, ND; a son, Gene Flatin of Arvada, Colorado; 11 grandchildren: Melaine (Chuck) Trites, Sioux Falls, SD, Holly (Al) Spilles, Rogers, MN, Mary Flan, Plymouth, MN, Liza (Jeff) Majkrzak, Corcoran, MN, Daniel (Stacy) Grunewald, Crookston, MN, Brent (Doreen) Grunewald, Ada, MN, Kendra (Jeff) Larson, Eagan, MN, Cory Clifford Grunewald, Plymouth, MN, Penny (Ray) Page, Carthage, NY; step-grandchildren: Mark (Jane) Johnson, Alexandria, MN, Michele (Ross) Amundson, Eden Valley, MN, Mark (Annette) Tommerdahl, Dawn Tommerdahl, and Rob Quanbeck; great-grandchildren: Kendra (Erik Saxvig) and Andrew Trites, Sam and Mitchell Spilles, Alex and Paige Majkrzak, Tyler, Kortney and Tanner Grunewald, Dana, Kelsey, and Scott Grunewald, Aaron and Nicole Larson, Kai Grunewald, Morgan Piles and Isabel Page; step-great-grandchildren: Quin Amundson, and Abbie (Cade) Wurster and Derick Johnson, Alexandria, MN; Great-great-grandchild, Rian Grunewald; stepbrother, Gordon (Ann) Flatin, of Fergus Falls; sister-in-law, Charolette (Joe) Sullivan of St. Louis Park, MN, and several nieces, and nephews. Preceding him in death were his wife, Ruth; sisters, Arlene and Thelma; brothers, Lawrence, Lloyd, Orville, and Ed; step-brothers, Alvin and Richard Theodorson; and sons-in-law, Si Flan and Harold Johnson. Memorials are preferred to the Pioneer Retirement Community Building Fund.
