Douglas A. Hovland, 86, of Fergus Falls, died Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at Park Gardens in Fergus Falls.
Douglas Allen Hovland was born December 23, 1937 to John and Alma (Meslow) Hovland. He graduated from Fergus Falls High School. He enlisted in the US Navy for two years after high school. Doug was employed by Ottertail Power Company as a Graphic Artist.
On July 24, 1959 he married Carol Joy Houghtaling at Foxhome Lutheran Church. They made their home in Fergus Falls. Doug and Carol were married for 59 years.
He was a talented woodworker and spent many hours in the shop. Doug enjoyed fishing in his favorite spot on Battle Lake. In the summers he spent time at Sunset Beach Resort on West Battle Lake and made many lifelong friends. During the winter months he went to Yuma, AZ. He also enjoyed bow hunting and gun hunting. His family was most important to him.
He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he held many roles and served as sexton for Bethlehem Cemetery. Doug was also a member of Fergus Falls Jaycees, Relay for Life, Elks, and Eagles. He made many friendships.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Carol Hovland; parents, John and Alma Hovland; siblings, Hub (Marilyn), Ken (Martha), Joe (Ollie), Linc, Alice (Earl) Olson, June (Sy) Weseman, Margie (Johnny) Jensen, Lorraine (Kermit) Kastella; parents-in-law, Joe and Hazel Houghtaling; sister-in-law, Pat (Derrell) Nitz, and son-in-law, Glenn Moses.
Doug is survived by his children, Jackie Berndt and Brenda Moses; grandchildren, Abby Berndt (Wes Doney), Adam Berndt (Rebecca Sandmeier), Jenna (Alex) Lund and Joseph (Brittney) Moses; great-grandchildren, Micah Glenn, Eli Gordon, and Thomas Glenn; siblings, Johnny Hovland and Ann Butkus; brother-in-law, Kent (Margie) Houghtaling, and many nieces and nephews.
To the staff at Park Gardens: You have been a gift to Dad and the love and care you shared with him will never be forgotten. There is a special place in heaven for angels like you.
Service: 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Olson Funeral and Cremation in Fergus Falls, with visitation one-hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
