Doris Maxwell

January 26, 1920 — June 25, 2008

Doris Helen Maxwell, 88, a resident of Fergus Falls, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls, surrounded by her three daughters. She was born on January 26, 1920, in Alcester, South Dakota, the daughter of Albert and Amanda Myhr. After graduating from high school, Doris received her teaching certificate from a private teacher preparation school, and began her life-long career in teaching. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Cliff Maxwell, and they were blessed with sixty-three happy years together. As an elementary, pre-school, and Head Start teacher for migrant children, Doris touched the lives of many children and families. Lovingly remembered as “Miss Doris” to hundreds of children over 25 years, Doris’s legacy at the Claire Ann Shover preschool lives on. Doris was also a partner in the many YMCA’s that Cliff directed, and established the first child care center at the Fergus Falls YMCA. In appreciation of her work, the YMCA honored her at a special Appreciation Open House on April 27, 2004. Doris was also an active member of Y’s Folks and First Lutheran Church. Doris’s passion was her family. She always took an active interest in the lives of all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and was a loving mentor to each. After moving from their home several years ago, Cliff and Doris enjoyed living at Mill Street Residence, where the staff surrounded them with loving care. She will always be remembered for her positive outlook on life, love of people, and service to others. Throughout her life, she made a profoundly positive and lasting impact on the lives of everyone she touched. She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all. Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband. Survivors include her brother, Robert (Nancy) Myhr of Skokie, Illinois; her three daughters:  Patty (Jim) Noren of Woodbury, Minnesota, Kathy (Dick) Ofstedal of Annandale, Minnesota, and Barb (Glen) Soliah of Jacksonville, Florida; grandchildren: Ryan (Carmen), Chad (Christine), Luke (Marissa), Matt (Jenn), Megan and Tiffany; great-grandchildren: Alex, Sofia, Katie, Ryan, Sara, Michael, and Hannah; one niece and four nephews.   Memorial Service: 10 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls Clergy: Reverend Saul Stensvaag Interment:  First Lutheran North Cemetery, Fergus Falls Reception: 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mill Street Residence in Fergus Falls Assistance provided by Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls.
