Donna Ruth Isakson

Donna Ruth Isakson, age 88, of Vergas, MN, formerly of LaMoure, ND, passed away May 9, 2017, at home under the care of family members and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
On April 13, 1929, Donna was born to John and Esther (Kaiser) Matzke in Litchville, ND. She attended school in Marion, ND. Donna moved to Valley City, ND where she raised her five children and worked as a cook for various restaurants. After moving to LaMoure, ND, she worked for the supper club, the public school and retired from the senior citizen center in 1991. In LaMoure, she met her husband Dennis Isakson. They married on February 20, 1973.
Donna learned to cook from her mother on the family farm. That love of cooking and baking supported her and her family and delighted many throughout her life. Whether she was cooking for a restaurant, catering a wedding, volunteering for the senior center, or baking cookies for the neighborhood kids, every dish was prepared with pride and love. Donna was never idle and enjoyed gardening, wood working, sewing quilts, and crocheting. Family and friends were the joy in Donna's life and she asked only for those people to gather together, share a meal, and to appreciate that special time together.
Surviving her are her five children, Diane Gisvold of Fargo, ND, Carol (Robert) Johnson of Grand Forks, ND, Gerald Holden of Cooperstown, ND, Abbey Thornburg of Jamestown, ND, and Maurina (Mark) Stordahl of Vergas, MN; brothers Delmore Matzke, Columbiana, AL, and Dale (Gail) Matzke, West Fargo, ND; sisters, Marlene (Jerome) Gruman, Valley City, ND, and Corrine Peterson, Sumner, WA; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and siblings LeRoy Matzke, James Matzke, Edward Matzke, Helen Anderson, and Marjorie Warcken.
Donations in memory of Donna may be made to Hospice of the Red River Valley.
A graveside service will be held at Lake View Cemetery in Marion, ND, on May 27, 2017, at 1:00 p.m.
