Donald Edward Wahl, 89, a resident of Fergus Falls, passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls.
He was born on December 27, 1928, in Duluth, MN. Don and his parents, Edward and Marie (Storhoff) Wahl lived in Duluth until he was 12 years of age, when his family moved to Fergus Falls where he attended high school. He served in the United States Army from 1948-1952, assisting in the Korean Conflict, and achieving the rank of Corporal.
After the service, he worked on the farm in Elizabeth Township for his aunt and uncle (Ole Storhoff and Severina Stroschein) while attending and graduating from Hanson Mechanical Trade School of Fargo, ND.
On June 26, 1954, Don married Regina Baima in Holy Family Catholic Church in Oglesby, IL. They lived in Peru and Oglesby from 1954 to 1969. He worked initially at the Marquette Cement Factory prior to opening his own filling station, then as a barge tug mechanic, followed by working for a local car dealership. In 1969, they moved to the family farm near Fergus Falls where Don worked for Minnesota Motors and then the City of Fergus Falls until his retirement in January 1989.
Don was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and he truly enjoyed people. He loved hobby farming, tinkering with cars, woodworking, gardening, fishing, outdoor sports, playing cards, and dancing. Don was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and a life-time member of the VFW Post 612.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Edward and Marie Wahl; grandson, Christopher Wahl.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Regina Wahl of Fergus Falls; three sons, Donald (Evelyn) Wahl of Tucson, AZ, Daniel (Linda) Wahl of Inver Grove Heights, MN, Dennis (Ann) Wahl of Riverside, CA, four daughters, Denise (Steve) Welch of Salisbury, NH, Dawn Claire (Dan) Burns of Yankton, SD, DiAnne (Chad) Biss of Wendell, MN, Debra (Robert) Stone of Jefferson, GA, 13 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls.
Visitation: 2-4 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2018, with a 3:30 p.m. public prayer service at Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls, and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2018, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Fergus Falls, MN
