Donald Eugene “Don” Halvorson, 71, of Underwood, Minnesota, died Saturday, January 12, 2013, at his residence under the care of his family and Lakeland Hospice.
He was born May 30, 1941, in Maddock, North Dakota, the son of Olaf A. and Edith (Kjall) Halvorson. He attended school in Crary, North Dakota, graduating from Crary High School in 1959. He later attended the University of North Dakota, receiving his BS in Business Administration in 1972.
Don served with the U.S. Army from 1964 – 1966, where he was stationed state side and served for a short time in the Dominican Republic, receiving the Good Conduct Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
On January 14, 1967, he married Doris “Dody” LaFountain in Carson City, Nevada. Don was employed as an auditor with the Public Service Commission in Carson City, Nevada from 1972 – 1974. He then worked for the Bently Nevada Corporation in Minden, Nevada, as the manager of Accounting Services from 1974 until his retirement in March of 2000.
He attended Bethel Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls.
After his retirement, Don taught himself to weld and he enjoyed working in his shop on various projects. He also had a great interest in old cars and Dodge trucks.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Olaf and Edith Halvorson.
Survivors include his wife, Doris “Dody” Halvorson of Underwood; children: Renee (Monte) Fredrickson of Fergus Falls MN, Jennifer (Eric) Vangstad of Fargo ND, and Kimberly (Jake) Parson of Eau Claire WI; four grandchildren: Ryan, Gabrielle and Logan Stocks of Fergus Falls, and Makenzie Vangstad of Fargo; and a sister, Dorothy Rerich of Carefree AZ.
A graveside memorial service will be held in late spring at Vasa Cemetery in rural Esmond, North Dakota.
