Cynthia Laugen

Cynthia Grace Laugen, 88, a resident of Devils Lake and formerly of Fergus Falls, died Saturday, January 15, 2011, at the Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake, North Dakota. She was born on November 1, 1922 in Foxhome, MN, the daughter of Harry C. and Lila (Vesey) Garberg. She grew up in Fergus Falls and graduated from Fergus Falls High School, where she was an active student and a member of the Drum Corp. On March 18, 1944 she married Orville Laugen in Fergus Falls. Her husband enlisted in the United States Army in 1945 at which time she resided with her mother in Fergus Falls. Upon Orville's discharge the couple farmed in the Elizabeth area. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, handiwork and attending the grandchildren's activities. She was a member of the Augustana Lutheran Church in Elizabeth where she was active in music, choir, ladies aide, Sunday school and helping where help was needed. She was also a bookkeeper at the YMCA and an avid volunteer through the community and at PioneerCare and Lakeland Hospice. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Orville, who died on October 26, 2008; sisters, Harriet Davidson, Dorothea Phillips, Neoma Kube and Beth Tustin; brothers, Vernon, Robert, and Gerald Garberg; and son-in-law, Loren Backstrom. Survivors include her two daughters: Linda (Mark) Brusven of Devils Lake, and their children: Kim (Jeff) Trana and son, Jayce of Devils Lake, Bob (Jess) Brusven of Shelby, MT and their children Brittany, Wyatt and Cameron, and Jeff (Amelia) Brusven of Tonganoxie, Kansas, and their children Morgan and Colton, and JoAnne (Daryle) Bjur of Jamestown, ND, and their children: Kevin (Amanda) Backstrom and their children Ella, Marie, and Grace of Erhard, MN, and Kelly (Mason) Thompson of St. Cloud, MN and their daughters Tyra and Elyse; siblings, Alice (Leroy) Marple of Kennewick, WA and Harry "Bud" (Colleen) Garberg of Billings, MT, as well as several nieces and nephews. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Olson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
