Clifford Hieb, 88, of Fergus Falls, died Monday, August 12, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family.
Clifford Hieb was born September 5, 1935, in Goodrich, ND to Emil and Martha (Dutt) Hieb. He grew up in McClusky, ND where his great grandparents homesteaded and his grandparents lived and farmed. He attended country school and had to do the chores before and after school. He was baling hay at 9 years old.
He enlisted in the Army in 1954 and was sent to Korea where he was a bridge specialist. In 1956 he was honorably discharged and awarded the medal of good conduct.
He met his wife, Jean Fronning in Benson, MN where he was employed digging ditches and Jean was teaching. They married December 24 1960. They had 3 children Robert Hieb an infant son who died, Carolyn Hieb and Steven Hieb. He took them fishing every Saturday morning at Ten Mile Lake. He took them trapping for muskrat and one year used the money to buy Jean an electric knife for Christmas. He also loved hunting and went to Wyoming to Elk hunt a few times.
Clifford worked road construction for Evavold Construction, Strums Construction, Riley Brother Construction and Central Specialties. He was a dragline operator in early years, and then a road grading operator.
He loved using his bobcat on the Farm scooping snow and hauling branches. He made many improvements to the farm. One year he planted 500 trees in one day. Clifford also loved visiting and liked talking about the old days. Clifford was an exceptionally hard, contentious worker. In whatever he did he made sure it was done correctly. He also loved learning and figuring out how things worked. Clifford was a very generous person. He loved dogs, wildlife and nature. In recent years when he couldn’t get outside, he always asked if the purple martins were back if I saw any deer or pheasants. He loved seeing the crabapple trees bloom in spring and seeing the migrating monarchs and changing colors in fall. His dogs brought him much joy, friendship and companionship. If he bought a hamburger, he bought one for his dog. He is deeply loved and missed by his daughter Carolyn, son Steven, his dog Hey and his grand dog Henry.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Keith; wife, Jean; sister in-law, Arvalee Fronning Bergerson; brothers-in-law; Lynn Fronning, Loren Fronning and Arvid (Bud) Bergerson; nephew, Brett Bergerson .
