Clarice M. Sundby, age 98, of Battle Lake and formerly of Underwood, died Wednesday, July 6, 2016, at the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center.
Clarice was born on December 13, 1917, to Neal and Anna (Kolberg) Olson in Fortuna, ND. She spent her early years on a farm in Divide County, ND. She was baptized on February 24, 1918, at Writing Rock Church in Fortuna, ND. During the Great Depression, Clarice moved with her family to Minnesota. On May 14, 1933, she was confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Erhard.
On March 13, 1939, Clarice married Gordon Sundby in Underwood, MN. Together Clarice and Gordon farmed in Sverdrup Township for over forty years. In 1984, they built their retirement home, which they enjoyed for seventeen years. In 2001, they moved to Tamarack Manor in Underwood. Gordon moved to the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center in 2006, and Clarice followed him there when the assisted living apartments opened in July of 2007. She moved to the nursing home in March of 2013.
Clarice was a member of Sverdrup Lutheran Church in Underwood. She taught Sunday School and was active in the women’s groups. She was a former 4H Club Leader and was a member of the District 112 Mother’s Club, Homemaker’s Club, Sons of Norway, and the Underwood Senior Citizens.
Clarice enjoyed camping with Gordon and crocheting, embroidery, and quilting. She was a marvelous cook. Her favorite food was coffee and she made delicious lefse, cookies, cakes and doughnuts to share with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Neal and Anna Olson; her husband, Gordon Sundby in 2008; her sisters, Slyvia Olson and Thelma Trana; and a brother, Kerwin Olson.
Clarice is survived by her son, Ken (Janet) Sundby of Cambridge; a daughter, Judy (Larry) Shaw of Pillager; her grandchildren, Brent (Trisha) Sundby of Rhinelander, WI, Jodi (Russ) Kurtti of Wyoming, MN, Tracy (Rick) Wallin of Pequot Lakes, and Jim (Danielle) Shaw of Pillager; her great-grandchildren, Natalee, Samantha, Blake and William Sundby, Zack and Luke Kurtti, Logan and Braden Wallin and Kaylee and MacKenzie Shaw; a brother, Ernest Olson of Big Fork; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
