Chester Wick

April 29, 1923 — August 23, 2012

Chester Maynard Wick, formerly of Waldport, Oregon, died Thursday, August 23, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home in Battle Lake, Minnesota. Chester was born to Carl Benjamin Wick and Molla (Kjono) Wick in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota on April 29, 1923. Following his graduation from high school at Rothsay, Minnesota in 1941, he moved to Seattle, Washington, where he worked as a pipefitter at the Lake Washington Shipyards. He joined the Navy in 1943 and served for 6 years, earning a Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal WWII, and the Navy Occupation-China Service Medal. After his discharge from the Navy in1949, he worked in Seattle as an auto mechanic and parts salesman. In 1955, Chester moved to Alaska and fished commercially, homesteading at Point Baker. After his retirement in 1985, Chester moved to Oregon where he met his long-time partner, Bette (Isely) Robinson. They traveled and spent winters in Cottonwood, Arizona until 2004, when Waldport, Oregon became their permanent home. Bette passed away April 7, 2012. Chester was a lifetime member of: Pioneers of Alaska, Wrangle #22; Elks Lodge, Jerome, Arizona; Veterans of Foreign Wars; and a member of the Moose Lodge in Waldport, Oregon. Chester was proud to have voted for Alaska statehood in 1958 and enjoyed telling of his adventures in Alaska and in World War II. Chester is survived by his sister, Barbara Kolstad, of Underwood, Minnesota; numerous nieces and nephews; and Bette Robinson’s children: James Robinson of San Jose, California, Ronald Robinson (Ruthann) of Coquille, Oregon, and Glenyce “Glenny” Moir of Boring, Oregon. Chester was preceded in death by his parents; his companion of 26 years, Bette Robinson; brothers Kenneth Wick and Wallace Wick; brother-in-law, Chester Kolstad; sisters-in-law, Helene Wick and Mae Wick; and nephews Rodney Wick and David Kolstad. Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the funeral home Memorial Service: 10 a.m. Saturday, September 1, 2012 at Olson Funeral Home Chapel Clergy: Chaplain Greg Hayek Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls is in charge of the arrangements.
