Chester Kolstad

Chester James Kolstad 82, of Underwood, Minnesota, died Wednesday, August 13, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, ND. Chester was born April 23, 1926, in Duluth, MN to Otto and Jennie (Flengstad) Kolstad. He attended rural School District #109 in Underwood, MN and graduated from Underwood High School. On November 7, 1948, he was united in marriage to Barbara Wick in Rothsay, MN. A celebration of their nearly 60 years together was held August 3, 2008. Chester and Barbara were parents of six children and lived on the family dairy farm north of Underwood. They sold milk to Cass-Clay Creamery in Fargo, and Chester served on Cass-Clay’s board of directors for 29 years. He also served on the board of the Minnesota Milk Producers Association. Chester was a member of Masonic Cornerstone Lodge #99 and of Eagles Aerie 2339, both in Fergus Falls, MN. He was an elder and served as clerk of session at Maine Presbyterian Church, Underwood, MN. Chester and Barbara were also members of the Sons of Norway Chester and Barbara traveled extensively and enjoyed visiting a number of international destinations. They enjoyed many social activities together, including square dancing and Senior Meals at the Underwood Community Center. They shared many happy days with their family and friends at their cottage on Otter Tail Lake. They volunteered many hours at the Food Shelf in Fergus Falls. Chester was preceded in death by his parents and a son, David. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, two sons, Norman (Kathy Kensinger) of Underwood and Owen (Mary Wickham) of Peoria, IL; and three daughters: Mary (Norman) Floden of Perham, MN; Linda (Harold) Hagen of Oakdale, MN; and Nancy (Dennis) Quam of Battle Lake, MN; sixteen grandchildren and step-grandchildren; five great grandchildren; 3 sisters and 2 brothers in-law, Loretta Haukebo, Beverly and Vernon Eastby, Janet and Norman Maloney. Visitation will be Friday starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Maine Presbyterian Church and concluding with a prayer and Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 16 at the church with visitation one hour prior to the service.
