Charles Lee Merrick, 66, a resident of Ottertail, Minnesota, died Monday, September 20, 2010, after a brave battle with cancer, at his home under the care of Lakeland Hospice. He was born December 21, 1943 in Maquoketa, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Alma (Earles) Merrick. He grew up in Maquoketa and Davenport, Iowa. Charles spent his last nine years with his fianceé, Virginia Perrington, and her grown children, Warren Marovich, Kenneth (Eunice) O’Brien, and Jennifer (Terry) Powers. Charles also is survived by his children: Gary (Connie) Merrick, John Paul (Brandy) Merrick, Roger Merrick, Ronald Merrick, and Julie (David) Platt; 21 grandchildren; and three sisters: Joy Rollinger of Anamosa, IA, and Carol Crist and Jean (Mel) Heister, all of Maquoketa, IA. Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Cathryn Moore; and a brother Oscar Merrick Jr. Charles was a gentle, kind, laid back man, who loved his children and grandchildren very much. He loved to camp and fish, and spend time with his family. We will all miss him very much. There will be a private family service held at a later date.
