Catherine Mildred Johnson, age 100, of Mankato, formerly of Fergus Falls, died Friday, November 13, 2015, at Oak Lawn Rehabilitation Center in Makato, MN.
She was born August 18, 1915, in LaMoure, ND, the daughter of Albert and Mildred (Alister) Powers. She attended school there and after graduating from high school, she attended Valley City State Teachers College, after which she taught in ND.
On December 31, 1936, she married Harold E. Johnson in LaMoure, where they lived until 1942, when they moved to Evansville, MN. In 1945, they moved to Detroit Lakes and then to Fergus Falls, in 1952, where her husband managed Fergus Dairy. When Harold retired in 1974, they moved to the home he built on West Battle Lake. They spent 10 happy years there, shared with their family and friends. When Harold’s health began to fail, they moved back to Fergus Falls, where they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at Grace United Methodist Church. After Harold’s death in 1997, Catherine moved to Pioneer Pointe in Fergus Falls, where she lived for six years. Due to her declining health in 2003, she moved to Summit Place in Eden Prairie, MN. She moved to Oaklawn Rehabilitation Center in Mankato in 2008.
Catherine was a member of Grace United Methodist Church since 1952 and participated in various Women’s Organizations there. She was a substitute teacher in the Fergus Falls Elementary Schools, and for 8 years, she taught at Claire Ann Shover Nursery School. She always enjoyed young children. Catherine loved her home, time spent with family, grandchildren and friends, especially the holidays and birthdays. She enjoyed cooking, handwork, reading, letter writing, puzzles, decorating and helping others.
Preceding Catherine in death were her parents, Albert and Mildred Powers; her husband, Harold Johnson;a granddaughter, Susan Johnson; and two sisters, Genevieve Klatt and Jeanne Muir.
Survivors include her three sons, H. Douglas (Ardyce) Johnson of Blaine, Charles R. (Peggy) Johnson of Janesville and Larry A. (Joyce) Johnson of Estero, FL; five grandchildren, Scott (Sue) Johnson, Judy (Paul) Vijums, Jeffrey (Celina Blandford) Johnson, Brian Johnson and Benita (Al) Conde; five great-grandchildren, Ryan and Alex Vijums, Braeden and Brooke Johnson and AJ Conde; one sister, Colleen (Phil)Thompson of Spokane, WA; one brother, Charles J. Powers of Packwood, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials are preferred to Grace United Methodist Church in Fergus Falls, or Mayo Hospice in Mankato, MN.
