Carol VanderLinden

Carol VanderLinden, 81, of Fergus Falls, died Sunday, January 11, 2015, at her home, after suffering a stroke on December 31, 2014. Carol was surrounded by her loving family.

Carol Suzanne Phillips VanderLinden, was born January 18, 1933, to Austrid (Anderson) and Stanley Phillips in Minneapolis’s Swedish Hospital, the third of three daughters. Her education included Kenwood Elementary School, Bryant Junior High School and graduation at West High School, all in Minneapolis. Her love of the lake originated with her first nine years living at Cedar Lake in Minneapolis.

On August 15, 1952, she was married to Warren VanderLinden at Bethel Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, to which marriage three children were born, John, Patricia and James.

Through Warren’s employment with General Motors, they resided in Minneapolis, MN, Billings, MT, Dickinson, ND, Richfield, Brainerd, Bloomington and Moorhead, MN, before settling in Fergus Falls on January 1, 1973.

Carol spent many hours volunteering at Lake Region Hospital, American Cancer Society activities in Fergus Falls, and at the state level. She chaired the first Daffodil Days and the first (and many more) Relay for Life events. Altogether, she was involved with ACS for thirty years. She worked at Clara B. Wright dress shop in Fergus Falls.

Carol and Warren created many special memories together. They traveled to 47 of the lower 48 states, Canada, Mexico, Paris, London and Barbados, as well as Fort Walton Beach, FL.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Warren, on October 10, 2014; her parents; sister, Betty Walters; brothers-in-law, Roy Walters and Richard Hoffman.

Survivors include three children, John (Beth) of Baxter, MN, Patricia (friend, David Binnebose) of Fergus Falls; James (Lydia) of Underwood; ten grandchildren; Kris (Carol) Evavold, Dan (Tami) Evavold, Amy (Seth) Lynne, Pete (Allyssa Jensen) VanderLinden, Sam VanderLinden, Tyler VanderLinden, Annie VanderLinden, Alena (Michael) Storlie, Reid Wright, Erin Deutschlander; six great-grandchildren, Dylan and Boden “Van” Evavold, Asher Lynne, Jackson VanderLinden, Morgan Storlie, Kosa Lewis; a sister, Marion Hoffman of West Bend, WI, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials are preferred to Fergus Falls Cancer Center or Lakeland Hospice.
