Carl H. Gonderman, 98, a resident of Fergus Falls, died Thursday, June 10, 2010 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls. Carl was born on September 11, 1911 in Ada, MN, the son of August and Christina Gonderman. He grew up in Ada and went to Hasty School southeast of Ada. After school he worked at various farms in the area. He entered the United States Army in March of 1941 and served in Africa and France during World War II, hauling ammunition. He was honorably discharged in early 1945. He returned to Ada to farm. He married Edna Gilbertson in Moorhead, MN. On September 11, 1971, he married Evelyn Tobin Erickson in Moorhead. The couple lived in Moorhead, where Carl worked on a mail route. They moved to Watertown, South Dakota for five years, purchasing a shoe repair business, calling it “Carl’s Shoe Repair”. They later moved to Wadena, continuing to operate Carl’s Shoe Repair Shop. He retired in the mid 1990’s from his Wadena paper route and they moved to Fergus Falls. He entered the Minnesota Veteran’s Home on February 27, 2006. Carl was a lifetime member of the Wadena V.F.W. He enjoyed fishing, and playing cards and bingo. Preceding him in death were his first wife, Edna, two brothers, Walter, and one in infancy, a nephew; a stepdaughter, Arleen Fenske; and his stepsons, Tom Erickson and Alvin “Tubby” Erickson. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Gonderman, of Fergus Falls; his stepchildren: Marcy (George) Wendling of Leonard, ND, Mary (Jerry) Johnson of Fergus Falls, and Jackie (Dwight) Nelson of Monroe, WA; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
